Using the Seestar S30

A simple step-by-step guide to setting up the Seestar S30 and capturing your first deep-sky photo — written for teachers and students aged 9 and up.

Before you begin — Safety first

  • An adult should always be present when the telescope is being used.
  • NEVER point the telescope at the Sun without the solar filter fitted first. Looking at the Sun through any telescope can cause permanent eye damage.
  • Only use the charger that came with the device, or one recommended by the manufacturer.
  • Carry and place the telescope carefully — it contains sensitive optics and electronics.

1. What is the Seestar S30?

The Seestar S30 is a smart telescope. It finds objects in the night sky by itself, tracks them as the sky moves, and builds up a photo over time using its built-in camera. You control everything from a free app on a phone or tablet — there are no eyepieces to look through.

2. Getting the telescope ready

  1. Find a flat, open spot — Choose a stable, flat surface outdoors, away from bright lights, with a clear view of the sky (not blocked by trees, walls, or roofs).
  2. Attach the tripod — Screw the tripod onto the bottom of the S30 by turning it clockwise until secure, then unfold the tripod legs and stand it on the ground.
  3. Power it on — Press the power button for 1 second, then press and hold it for 2 seconds. Wait for a “beep-beep” sound and the power light to turn on.
  4. Connect to power — Make sure the telescope is charged, or connected to a power source, before your session.

3. Connecting the app

  1. Install the app — On the phone or tablet, download the free “Seestar” app from the App Store (iPhone/iPad) or Google Play (Android).
  2. Connect to the telescope — Open the app and follow the on-screen instructions to connect. iPhone/iPad usually connects automatically — Android devices need you to go into Wi-Fi settings and manually select the telescope’s network (named something like S30_xxxxxx), using the password 12345678.
  3. Allow the first-time activation — The very first time the telescope is used, it needs an internet connection to activate. Make sure the phone or tablet has internet access and keep the app open until this finishes.
  4. Install any updates — If the app asks to update the telescope’s firmware, allow it and wait patiently — this keeps the telescope working properly.

4. Capturing a deep-sky photo

A “deep-sky object” is something far beyond our Solar System, such as a star cluster, nebula, or galaxy. Here’s how to capture one:

  1. Open Stargazing mode — In the app, go to the stargazing screen (sometimes shown as a sky map or catalog of objects).
  2. Pick a target — Browse or search the list of objects. The app will show which ones are currently visible from your location — pick one that’s marked as visible.
  3. Tap “GoTo” — The telescope will automatically point itself at the chosen object. There’s no need to move it by hand.
  4. Let it stack — The telescope takes many short exposures and combines (“stacks”) them automatically. The live image on screen will look faint and grainy at first, then get clearer and more detailed the longer you leave it — a few minutes is a good starting point.
  5. Save your image — Once you’re happy with the result, save the image in the app. It can then be shared or downloaded to the device.

5. Finishing your session

  1. Park the telescope — Use the app’s power-off / park option if available, so the telescope returns to a safe position.
  2. Power down — Press and hold the power button for 2 seconds to switch the telescope off.
  3. Pack away carefully — Fold the tripod legs, and store the telescope in its case away from dust and moisture.

6. If something goes wrong

If this happens…Try this
The app won’t find the telescopeMake sure the power light is on and steady. On Android, connect manually to the Seestar Wi-Fi network in your phone’s Wi-Fi settings (password: 12345678).
It asks to update firmwareLet it finish — don’t close the app. This can take a few minutes.
The image looks blurryWait — the S30 focuses itself. Give it a minute after choosing a new target.
The picture looks faint or grainy at firstThis is normal! Deep-sky images build up detail over several minutes of stacking. The longer you leave it, the clearer it gets.
Nothing happens when I tap GoToCheck the telescope has a clear view of the sky and isn’t blocked by a building, tree, or roof.

Going further — EQ mode (for older students / astronomy clubs)

  • The S30 normally works in “Alt-Az” mode — it moves up/down and side-to-side, and needs no polar alignment at all. This is what this guide covers, and it’s the best choice for classroom use.
  • An optional “EQ mode” also exists, which aligns the telescope with the Earth’s rotational axis to allow longer exposures and reduce star-trailing on faint targets.
  • EQ mode requires levelling the tripod, roughly facing one leg north, setting the tilt to your latitude, and running the app’s polar alignment routine until the error is under 1°.
  • It is fiddlier and less forgiving than the standard mode — the telescope must not be moved once aligned — so it suits an extension activity for older or more experienced students rather than a first session.
